BaT Auctions Presents: The Mohr Imports Monterey Collection Sale 2023

As Monterey Car Week nears once again, our friends at Mohr Imports are ahead of the game with their impressive annual Monterey Collection Sale locked, loaded, and ready to go live on BaT for the fourth year in a row. This year’s collection comprises 20 cars, primarily roadsters, sports cars, and grand tourers of European origin, spanning the years 1956-2016. The auctions will kick off on the morning of Monday, August 7 and will continue going live throughout the week. A preview is below, with the cars listed in alphabetical order by make.

At the head of the line are three roadsters from the 1960s, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider and an Austin-Healey 3000 BT7 Mk. I, and a 3000 BJ8 Mk. III. The Alfa comes out of long-term ownership and has been updated with replacement upholstery and carpets, an electric fuel pump, and Simpson lap belts. The Big Healeys are a both four-seaters—the first received a cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment at Healey Lane Restorations in Marcola, Oregon, in 2017, and is presented with a collection of photos from that work as well as a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate. The second car is finished in Metallic Golden Beige over red and was the subject of a recent refurbishment with Kurt Tanner Motorcars of Santa Ana, California.

Two sports coupes from Bavaria in the collection are separated by almost 25 years. The first, a blue-over-tan 1973 BMW 3.0CS, was sold on BaT back in 2017 by its then-owner of 22 years. Transmission and bottom end seals have since been replaced, and a tool kit and other accessories are included in the sale. The second car is a 1998 BMW M3 slicktop coupe finished in Bright Red over distinctive Modena Natur “Vader” seats. Sold new in Los Angeles, it is said to have spent most of its life in California and is offered with its original window sticker and a clean Carfax report.

Next is a 2012 Corvette ZR1 Centennial Special Edition, the lone domestic offering in the collection. All 206 of these cars were finished in Carbon Flash Black with carbon fiber accents, and power comes from a supercharged dry-sump LS9 V8 good for 638 horsepower. The 3ZR Premium Equipment Group was also selected for this example, adding a limited-slip differential, special wheels, Brembo ceramic-composite brakes, and premium audio and navigation systems.

Four members of this group hail from the quaint Italian village of Maranello, starting with two red, open-top, mid-engine offerings: a 1973 Ferrari 246 Dino GTS and a 1988 328 GTS. The Dino came into the US through Luigi Chinetti and was delivered to Bill Harrah’s Modern Classic Motors; it underwent a color change under previous ownership and comes with a Marcel Massini report. The 328 GTS was delivered new to Symbolic Motors and has been with its current owner since 1998. After 15 years in storage the car shows 17k miles, and was recommissioned in preparation for the sale with a belt service, fuel system cleaning, and replacement of the tires and battery.

Along for the ride are two examples of the 550 Maranello, Ferrari’s return to the front-engine grand touring category in the late 1990s. The first is a highly-optioned, 29k-mile car in Blu Pozzi over tan Daytona seats and features the Fiorano handling package, optional multi-piece wheels, and interior accents such as carbon fiber trim and a quilted leather headliner, and a six-piece set of Connolly luggage. The second is a black-on-black example with 13k miles, which received a belt service along with a new water pump and engine mounts in 2021.

Summers are short in Coventry, but Jaguar has always built open-top cars that can make the most of the pleasant weather; three of them are represented in this collection. The first, a 1957 XK150, was actually converted into a drophead coupe under previous ownership. The 1974 E-Type is a V12-powered Series III roadster that has been with its current owner for 34 years; finished in silver on black, it is fitted with a black hard top, chrome knock-off wire wheels, and a luggage rack. Finally, the very blue 2016 Jaguar Project 7 is one of 50 designated for the North American market. The Project 7 was a design exercise based on the F-Type and altered with aluminum bodywork, a driver’s helmet fairing, a carbon fiber aerokit, and a 575-horsepower variant of Jaguar’s supercharged 5.0-liter V8 as well as handling and brake upgrades.

Just 410 examples of the Bertone-designed Lamborghini Jalpa were built over a seven-year production run. This example was federalized by its original owner and has remained in their family to the present day. A major service in 2022 included overhauls of the carburetors and brakes, replacement of the timing belt, and a new fuel pump, engine gaskets, catalytic converters, tires, and spark plugs.

The open-top fun resumes in stately fashion with three offerings from Stuttgart. The black-on-red 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL was purchased new in Europe by a member of the United States Armed Services and later shipped back to California, where it remained in the same family until 2010. Its matching soft top still remains in the factory crate! Its younger sibling is a 1971 280SL Pagoda that has been refurbished in a similar scheme and runs a replacement fuel-injected M130 inline-six built by Metric Motors in 2021. The last open Benz is a 1967 250SE Cabriolet finished in brown over tan leather and equipped with an optional floor shifter.

The first Porsche is a 1959 356A Super 90 coupe from the final year of A production. The engine casing stamp matches that shown on the included Kardex, which also indicates that the car was finished in Ivory from the factory and imported by Max Hoffman. The fruit of Zuffenhausen also includes a 1987 911 Targa, a lifelong Miami car that shows 40k miles and has been with its current owner for 15 years. Its 3.2-liter flat-six was rebuilt in 2016 and is mated to a G50 five-speed transaxle.

Last, but surely not least, is this handsome oval-window 1956 Volkswagen Beetle with a Deluxe fabric sunroof. The car was painted metallic green in 1994 and has been accessorized with headlight guards, Marchal fog lights, a windshield visor, rear fender skirts, mud flaps, and a Motorola radio among other items.
